The sole purpose of Yagnopavit sanskar is to announce to the family and relatives that the child is now mature enough to understand the teachings of Vedas. He has become intelligent and can gain spiritual knowledge.
A lavish feast is organized to celebrate the Janeu ceremony. Yagnopavit ceremony starts with the mother feeding the child with four other children. Then the father places the Janeu across the shoulder of the child. He also whispers the sacred Gayatri mantra into the boy’s ears. The father becomes the guru of the child. It is then followed by Surya Darshanam, Bhikshakaranam, ashirwadam and Sandhya Vandanam.
